The Evil Empire is going down

Now, even though I reside in America’s left hand now, and am a big BIG fan of the Detroit Tigers….
In my heart I always will be first and foremost a Boston Red Sox girl. Born and raised in South Boston, I am a lifetime citizen of Red Sox Nation.
Tonight, though, I get the best of both worlds.
For my birthday, my friend Kimmy got tickets for her, Brad, her client, and myself to watch the Tigers take on the Yankees at Comerica Park. w00t w00t!
Somewhere in the stadium there will be a girl who is shouting extra loudly for the boys of Detroit to kick some serious butt.
Tonight, God willing, the Evil Empire is going down…

edited note:  That was disappointing.

100 Pieces – #11

11.) I go to Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers every year.

Opening Day 2008. Kathy (right) and Me

And I go with my fabulous friend Kathy – who makes the whole experience fun. She also looks after me to make sure that my food/adult beverage ratio is on the right track. 🙂 Kathy also knows the city way better than I do since she went to Wayne State University downtown. So we are always finding some great little pub or restaurant to pop into.

For the last two years we’ve bought season ticket packages as well – so Opening Day is just a start to a great summer. I’m going to admit it right here: I am a Detroit Tigers fan. There, I said it. I’m sorry, Boston Red Sox, you were my first love – and I’m still torn. Truly. But you’re so far away, and neither of us are very good at long distance relationships, are we?

The Happy Heckler

Last night’s game was FANTASTIC!  Beth & I had great seats: first row, practically in the Red Sox bullpen.

And I got to see Varitek up close.  *sigh*.  And Okajima.   And the general “latin heat” that is the relief pitching staff of the Red Sox.  And this cutie:

David Aardsma

And just so I wasn’t TOO biased – I wore my Tigers cap with my Red Sox shirt.  I do live in this town now, after all -and am pretty much a regular at Comerica Park each summer.  (gotta love the cheap season tix)

Besides the game, we had some serious entertainment coming from a few rows back – the most creative, funny heckler I’ve ever heard.  I didn’t even mind that he was jeering my BoSox!

Just a few quotes that I can recall:

“Hey Timlin! Your mother uses moisturizer!”

“Just kidding, your mother doesn’t use moisturizer” (said in an apologetic tone)

“But I heard a rumor about Epsom Salts!”

“Your mother has conjunctivitis!  Yeah, that’s right-  she’s got the pink eye. Bad”

“Your feet are calloused”

“You have a lazy eye”

“I hope your gums bleed when you go to the dentist”

“I hope your razor goes dull”

I suppose it was funnier live than online.  But you gotta give the guy props for creativity.  Especially in a family-friendly section.  He was way better than the drunks that came up later in the game and just shouted sexual innuendos at the pitchers.  Get some class, guys.  For real.  If you’re not gonna bring your A game – just go home. 🙂

A few of my favorite things….

Today is Amanda’s birthday.  She is an amazing woman who is funny, bright, caring, and witty.  Her husband really struck gold!  Happy Birthday, hon!  Love you.  As part of her birthday festivities, hubby is taking her to tonight’s Detroit Tigers game.  They are huge fans.

Speaking of Tigers’ fans…. Guess who else will be there tonight?  Yup – me.  And my dear friend Bethie (also a birthday girl this week).  So today is a great pre b-day night for me: Amanda, Bethie, Tigers and….

AND: they are playing the Red Sox.  sigh.

I got tickets for Beth & I right behind the Red Sox bullpen.  First row.   Happy Birthday, Beth!  I will admit that I am a little nervous about getting so excited that I will either: a.) pass out.  or b.) throw up.  Hopefully it will be: c.) none of the above.

because nothing spoils a good day (or birthday!) at the ball park then some peanutty puke.  (Trust me, I know all too well.)

Um – sorry about the tangent above. Back to the good stuff:

While we’re talking about ways to combine several things that I love at once, you must check out this post by BeanPaste.  Sushi & dessert? yummmm.  That’s what I call bliss. 🙂

However, my favorite combo is still the great friends that I get to share my birthday week with.  Joy is definitely more fun when it’s shared.  Amanda, Beth, Joey, Sue, Kelly, Evy: All my amazing birthday buddies.  You are all beautiful women whom I am truly blessed to be walking these miles with.  I love you all!

 love, jules

ps: just to clarify – I have never myself thrown up at a ball game. just to be absolutely clear.
