It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas

Getting a head start on one of my 2011 resolutions by resurrecting this site.

Nevermind the fact that I haven’t been getting much of a head start on my holiday shopping.  Or wrapping.  Or decorating.

But there are lots of friends from the interwebs and Twitter who are more than making up for my slack-tastic self in the holiday department.

1.) The Bloggess. If you haven’t yet read her post on the Christmas Miracle that her readers helped create,  you are missing out on a big piece of holiday spirit.  Go! Read it now!

2.) Domestic, But Not Martha.

Crystal has only been blogging for a (relatively) short time, but is already making an impact.  Check out  her Handmade Holiday series for lots of gifting ideas.  Especially companies – and Etsy sites – where your purchases make a difference.  (I’m looking at you, Sara from  Happy Brown House)

Go and check out the links above.  In the meantime, I’m going to work at getting my Christmas on.

My “birthday” party

Okay – so the party wasn’t for me – it was for this lady.

Bossy & I on my 29th (cough!) birthday

But it was my birthday.  And it was a party.  And it was fabulous!

There was laughter, hummus, good beer, and even better company:

Mommy’s Martini, MomZombie, Unmitigated (the artist formerly known as Middle Aged Woman), Deb, Suzan (aka: swirly fabulous), Elizabeth, and GrandeMocha.  Silly me, only took out my camera at the end of the night to take a few blurry photos.   Scrapbook FAIL.  But check out Bossy’s post on the night, as well as some of the other great bloggers above for actual pics.

And then, on the way home, I got my first (actual) birthday present….. A lovely ticket from the State Police.  Ha!

Actually, it was kind of a gift.  I only got written up for not having my new registration on me.  (New tabs were on the license plate – but the actual copy of the registration form was on my kitchen table.  Fail)

I can only hope that next year (when, surprisingly enough I will be turning 29! again!) is just as good.

I’ve got a feeling….

That tonight’s gonna be a good night.

The catchy tune by the Black Eyed Peas has been running through my head for a little while now.

Why?  Because tonight BOSSY is coming to Detroit!   She s did a road trip across the U.S. back in 2008 and a group of us local bloggers got together for a night of fun, wine, and a late-night White Castle trip.  Not to mention, the world’s yummiest salmon dish. (recipe is halfway down the post)

Now she’s doing it again, this time for her (No) Book Tour.  Because, well, she forgot to write a book.   But she did manage to organize a trip criss-crossing the country covering 12,000 miles in 6 weeks.  Yikes!  Check out Bossy’s website to see the latest stories of leggings, support hose, the best fast-food breakfast sandwiches, and living out of a car for one and a half months.  Also, her romance with John Cusak. (see below)

And a group of us are getting together at a local(ish) brew pup – Liberty Street Brewing Co. in Plymouth, MI.  I’m hoping to reunite with a few of the great women I met last time – and meet a few more.  Maybe even a guy will show up this time.

A few other reasons why today is going to be good:  It’s also my birthday. (woo-hoo!)  So before making the trek to Plymouth, my good friend Brad & I are going to catch an afternoon showing of Iron Man 2.  It’s also a sunny day – perfect for walking my foster dogs.  I also went to the chiropractor this morning and feel very relaxed and stretched out after my post-adjustment rolling treatment.  Also: the office staff at Dr Buller’s sang “Happy Birthday” to me when I walked in.  How sweet!

I hope you’ve got a feeling that today is going to be great for you as well.  And I hope that there is some sunshine in your life, wherever you are.

I’ve been taking a bit of a sabbatical from this site the last two months. Life has been chaotic and dramatic and I had to devote all my energy to just staying afloat…

But i hope to get back on here regularly soon – I have some drafts in the works and am looking forward to reconnecting with my blogging community!

If you’re gonna fail…

Fail BIG.  That’s how I roll.

So, I went off the NaBloPoMo wagon this year.  And only halfway through.  I realized at 11pm on Saturday when I was out with friends that I hadn’t yet posted that day.  I tried to do one from my phone, but couldn’t get the interface to work quite right.

And I knew I wouldn’t make it home in time to do a real one.

So – I knew I was going to fail.  And, in that spirit, I also took Sunday off.  (In my defense, I spent most of Sunday with a horrific headache that made looking at anything painful)

I almost didn’t even want to do today.  How sad is that?  I’m letting some self-imposed expectation defeat me?

Nuts to that!  I’m just gonna pick myself up and give it another try.  I have to look at what I’ve accomplished and not focus on what I didn’t.  Right?

So, while I was not posting, here’s what I did these last few days.

I read this:

I actually believed this was a true story for a while. Its not. But its still a dang good read.

I actually believed this was a true story for a while. It's not. But it's still a dang good read.

I had a great breakfast with some friends on a cold rainy morning.  What better way to spend a Saturday morning??

I watched this:

In case you werent sure if this movie will break your heart or not.... It will

This is a true story - sadly. And in case you weren't sure if this movie will break your heart or not.... It will.

And I was emotionally wrecked for a while.  It is actually still haunting me in many ways.  I think I cried 4 times during the movie, and once the day after.  It’s that good.  I had to wait for the perfect time to watch it.  And a cold, dreary, Saturday afternoon wrapped in a cozy hoodie, with warm soup = perfect!

(I also watched some college football)

I went out to watch this guy play at a fancy-schmancy restaurant where I had a marvelous chocolate martini:

He doesnt have a CD out yet in mass production. But check out his myspace music page.

I spent too much time on this:

and I hung out with some amazing 9th grade girls.  I’m always honored that they choose to share their lives with me.  I’ve been with some of these girls since 6th grade and I love watching them grow into amazing young women.

I hope to be fully back on the wagon again now.   And I’m ready to give this another go!

Something’s missing…

And that something would be my camera.  😦

Forever in our hearts - and online photo storage.

Forever in our hearts - and online photo storage.

Actually, it’s not missing.  It’s broken.  Which is not as bad, I guess.  At least I was able to pull out the SD card and upload all of my photos on to my computer.

I blame my lack of practice in relay baton-passing.  Kind of like the US 400 meter teams.  There was a bad hand-off while driving in Kenya and my poor camera suffered fatal injuries in the fall.  RIP polaroid.  You will be missed.

It’s been more of a struggle than I thought it would be – and that’s mostly due to the blogging.  I have all these stories in my head and they just don’t seem to work right without the photos.  I mean, without photos that I have taken.  That make sense to me.  That are part of the story.  You know?

I’ve been suffering from blog-envy lately because of this.  I see the progress of Jennifer’s pink hair.  Aubrey’s child napping, Wep’s weekend hikes.  And don’t even get me started on Melanie’s gorgeous shots of her kids and her cooking.

And what do I have?

Random shots that I can find on Photobucket.  Or old photos that I have taken. Or my phone?  All viable options to be sure.  But sub-par, really.

So I think I’ll take the opportunity in the upcoming weeks to dig into the archives and tell some great stories that I never got around to earlier.  I hope not to bore you too much!

And I’ll be doing my research later to pick out a new camera.  I can at least enjoy an excuse to upgrade!

Any suggestions for a good, basic camera with some good zoom options, maybe even upgradable?  For under a couple hundred dollars?

Friday Foto Fiesta!

Each week, Candid Carrie hosts an event – Phriday Photo Phiesta!

This is my first time playing along – I thought I’d give it a try as part of NaBloPoMo.

This is one of my new favorite pictures.

My peeps in Kenya - I miss spending so much time with them!

My peeps in Kenya - I miss spending so much time with them!

This is Kim, Brad, Jonathan & I in Nairobi last month, on the last day of our trip.  Kim, Brad & I live near each other in MI – and have become good friends through our shared Kenya experience.  Jonathan is our team leader, and lives just outside of Hilton Head, NC.  He is on staff at Harvesters International part time – an great ministry.  All three are amazing people and truly were a bright spot in an already-very-bright mission.  This is my fabulous foursome in Kenya.  We had so much fun, and laughed until we had tears.  Until we ran out of breath.  Until our abs hurt.

We can be goofy around each other.  And real.  We can also talk about bodily functions in a way that I can’t do with ANYONE else.  There’s just something about traveling to a remote location, away from everyone else that builds bonds.

But here’s the thing – even if I was at home, in my comfort zone, surrounded by my normal life:  I would still choose to hang out with these dorks.  Because they accept me as my dorky self.

Have a great Friday, and an even better weekend.  Don’t forget to stop by Candid Carrie’s blog to see who else is playing along!
